steaming pinguins

ok, i decided to reinstall my <insert bad words here> vista and couldn't find the cd's, so I decided to install linux on my laptop, lala everything works, the kid loves to watch slide downhill and catch fish (and see daddy crash into trees) and i even managed to install wine + steam and to play counter-strike

ok, now the problem for which i didn't really find any solution anywhere

if i put in the wine config for steam "virtual desktop" with 800x600 (the resolution i play on) I only use a small part of the screen, really ridicilous to play on

if i don't use the "virtual desktop" setting the game nicely goes fullscreen
BUT i can't see the whole screen, the lower part is missing (there were my health and ammo and stuff is)

anyone an idea how to solve it ?

(and the game is smoother then in vista!)

My guess it's because the resolution your full screen is set to is not supported by X.

check your x11config to see if all resolutions are the samen
